The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon wins AFCON opener match against Burkina Faso amidst VAR controversy.

The 33rd Africa Cup of Nation kick-starts with Cameroon picking a first win against Burkina Faso in group A. Cameroon was stripped of the opportunity to the tournament in 2019 due to a lack of preparation and Egypt hosted the tournament in 2019. The opening ceremony was witnessed by CAF President Patrice Mosetpe, Cameroon President Paul Biya, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino among others.

Before the game at Younde, six Burkina Faso players had tested positive to covid19 and the team had protested for another test to be carried out on their players as that maybe a way to the Cameroonian Federation wants to oppress them.

The line-up for the first game of the 33rd AFCON.

Cameroon XI: Onana, Ngadeu, Onguene, Tolo, Zambo, Moumi, Oum, Kunde, Fai, Aboubakar, Toko.

Burkina Faso XI: Koffi, Kabore, Dayo, Yago, Malo, B. Toure, Sangare, Guiro, B. Traore, Tapsoba, Bayala.

Match Analysis

24 minutes into the game, Gustavo Sangare scored the first goal of the tournament for Burkina Faso) converting a killer cross with a strong and precise shot that goes across the goal and past Onana.

Andre Zambo Anguissa was fouled in the penalty box of Burkina Faso, a penalty was awarded and Vincent Aboubakar converted from the spot-kick to level up the game at 1-1 at 40 minutes.

Just before the first half, Dayo made a horrendous challenge on a Cameroonian player in the penalty box and that resulted in another penalty. Aboubakar converted again, and the game stopped at 2-1 at halftime in favor of the host nation.

VAR controversy came up in the 59th of the game. Cameroon had a goal disallowed by the VAR.

69th minute, Cameroon coach opted for a double change, and it was Chuopo Moting who came in for Ekambi Toko and N’jie for Kunde.

Burkina Faso as well resorts to a double change as they continue to strive for an equalizer. Two changes were made in the 71st minutes of the game, Konate came in Tapsoba and Sanogo for Bayala.

81st minutes Basoggog made is the debut replacing Moumi and of course, you replace the man of the match Vincent Aboubakar.

At 88 minutes Burkina Faso still fighting to get an equalizer, subbing off the captain Traore, and Bande came in.

The indomitable lions of Cameroon wins at Younde by 2-1 in the opener of AFCON.

The host Nation who is on a quest for its sixth African Cup of Nation opens its campaign with a win against Burkina Faso in group A.

Ethiopia will play Cape Verde in the second game of groupA later tonight.
