United came out after HT with a renewed optimism and began to take the game to Wolves somewhat, without actually creating anything by way of clear-cut chances. It took 65 minutes for Rangnick’s side to spring into life, but eventually they created the best opening of the game when Nemanja Matić pulled back to Bruno Fernandes, but his effort thundered away off the crossbar. Fernandes was the architect moments later as his teasing free-kick was headed home by Cristiano Ronaldo, only for the offside flag to cut short his joy.
It was Wolves’ turn to rattle the woodwork next, when Romain Saïss’ free-kick just didn’t have the dip required and crashed away to safety via the crossbar. Wolves did eventually get the goal their performance deserved – João Moutinho was first to the loose ball on the edge of the area and he slammed home to the delight of the 3000 strong travelling Wolves faithful. Victory aligned with a clean sheet now means it’s 294 minutes since Wolves conceded a PL goal.
