Unfortunately, questions have been asked by fans about how some players’ names were omitted. Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo who rejoined the club this season has been excluded from the last eight men list. Despite scoring 18 goals and assisting 3 assists in the Premier League.
Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Virgil Van Dijk were also not shortlisted in the last eight. Sadio has been remarkable this season for Liverpool and in the league but was not considered the same as Virgil Van Dijk the Liverpool center-back.
The shortlisted last eight season review:
Trent Alexander Arnold (Liverpool).
Arguably the best right-back in the world, Trent has been terrific since his emergence into the Liverpool senior team. Trent has made 12 assists this season, with only Mohammed Salah having more (13). He has as well scored twice this season and made the list of the shortlisted younger players nominees as well.
Jerrod Bowen (Westham United).
The forward has hit double figures of 10 goals and 10 assists this season with the Hammers. Bowen made a club record as he became the second player to reach such a landmark with Westham.
Joao Cancelo (Manchester City).
Cancelo’s tremendous performance has earned him a spot on the list. He has been pivotal in City’s title race and assisted 7 times in total in the league. With 2799 passes, he remains the player with the most passes in the league.
Kevin Debruyne (Manchester City).
Despite his sloppy start to the season, Debruyne has intensified his game in the second round of the season. He has scored the most goals (15) for City this season, helping his side remain top of the league’s table. Debruyne won the award last season and would hope to retain it.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).
The Egyptian is the league’s top scorer with 22 goals and the most assists’ player of 13 this season. He has been part of the Liverpool phenomenon side that has not relented or given up on the title chase.
Haven’t lost the golden boot to Harry Kane by a goal difference last season, the Liverpool talisman would wish to hold his hands on both individual awards of best player and golden boot this season.
Son Heung Min (Tottenham).
No doubt, the emergence of Antonio Conte has remade the goal-scoring prowess of Son. He is the second player after Gareth Bale to hit 20+ league goals for Tottenham with no penalty inclusive. Just a goal behind Mohamed Salah on the goal chart race, Son is currently having one of his best seasons in the league.
Bukayo Saka (Arsenal).
Saka is the youngest player to make the list, for a 20-year-old who has scored 11 goals and assisted 6 times this season has contributed to Arsenal’s fervent chase of the top four. Saka is one of the Arsenal players to have played the most minutes this season,, and surely, they will keep up the top four races until the last day.
James Ward Prowse (Southampton)
The Southampton Captain who is referred to as one of the best free-kicks taken currently in the world has scored 4 of his 9 goals from his label free-kicks. The English player has been a manifestation in the league this season, despite Southampton not meeting expectations.
