Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford eased the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer amid speculation over his job, but it has inadvertently condemned Nuno to the sack after only four months in charge of the club.

His misery was summed up after being booed for substituting Lucas Moura for Steven Bergwijn in the second half – a decision that went down horribly in the wrong way with the Lilywhites’ fan base.

Chants of ‘you don’t know what you’re doing’ rang out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as the north Londoners failed to register a single shot on target in the Saturday Night Football contest, which had been labelled as the ‘El Sackico’ ahead of the game.

This loss follows on from the unexpected 1-0 defeat against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League and the London derby defeat to West Ham in game week 9 of the Premier League season.

When quizzed about what was going wrong after the defeat to Man United, Nuno refused to give a clear answer when asked if his messages were getting through to the players or not.

“Maybe it’s none of them,” he replied in his post match press conference. “You can have the right message, the right idea and things don’t go [to plan]. It’s not because of the message or understanding of the message. It’s the game of football.
