The opener game into the new season was between MFM and newly promoted Remo Stars. Remo Star stunned MFM at their own home ground, grinding needed results of 0-2 away from home.
In the same week, Enugu Rangers edged Katsina united at home soil to a surprise 1-2 defeat. There were reports that Katsina United fans had held Enugu Rangers hostage after the match, a report that was denied by the Katsina United manager.
In week two, it was the Oriental Derby between Enyimba FC and Enugu Rangers. Although the game was played at Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium, Nnewi Anambra State a neutral ground, Enyimba won the tie by 0-1 scoreline.
