Humiliated by Bochum at the weekend, a battered and bruised Bayern travelled to Austria looking for a response. What followed from Julian Nagelsmann’s side was an opening 45 minutes of desperate mediocrity, with the German champions deservedly trailing at the break. Substituted on in the 11th minute, Chukwubuike Adamu would hand Salzburg the lead with a delightfully curled strike midway through the first half and stun the six-time European champions.
Bayern were able to threaten the Salzburg goal on a number of occasions either side of falling behind, with their main attacking threat coming through makeshift wing-back Serge Gnabry. Firstly registering the game’s opening shot on target early in the contest, the 26-year-old would again be denied just before the break, but valiant defending from the brave Salzburg backline thwarted Gnabry’s double attempt.
Unbeaten in their previous 21 away matches in the competition, Bayern emerged from the break staring down the barrel of an unwanted upset. Despite their underwhelming first half, Nagelsmann’s side failed to break down a stubborn Salzburg backline, with the hosts untroubled for much of the second period. A wriggling run and stinging shot from Coman looked as if it was as good as it was going to get for Bayern, with the Frenchman’s effort forcing Philipp Köhn into a sharp save.
Ultimately, the persistent waves of attacks would present the visitors with an opening to goal, one which Coman expertly swept home. Having scored the winner in the 2019/20 final, the Frenchman would once again spare Bayern’s UCL blushes, with the 25-year-old latched on the end of Thomas Müller’s floated cross, before rifling beyond a despondent Köhn
