Manchester City extended their winning run in the Premier League (PL) to seven games by demolishing Leeds United 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
It took Pep Guardiola’s side just two minutes to register their first attempt on target when Jack Grealish struck from the edge of the area, but the strike was saved by Illan Meslier. City almost punished Leeds just moments later when they pounced on a defensive mix-up, but Bernardo Silva surprisingly fired wide. You could sense a goal was forthcoming and the ‘Cityzens’ opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Phil Foden hit the net following more defensive blunders by the ‘Whites’. The second goal immediately followed, as Grealish headed in following a Riyad Mahrez left-foot cross from the right-hand side. The rampant home side added a third on the half-hour mark as Rodri played in Kevin De Bruyne, who knocked the ball past the goalkeeper.
City started the second half just as they left off in the first by adding a fourth goal to their tally, as Mahrez fired in in the 49th minute as the ball deflected off a Leeds defender, leaving Meslier with no chance. Leeds bared their teeth a couple of times after HT, but the game was all but gone, leaving them protecting their own goal to avoid any further damage. Unfortunately for the away side, a ruthless De Bruyne made it 5-0 after the hour mark, powering in a wonderful strike from 30 yards out. John Stones added a sixth for the home side, striking on the rebound, before Nathan Aké headed in the seventh moments later to round off a classy performance for the league leaders.
The win for the ‘Cityzens’ extends their lead at the summit of the PL by four points, at least for tonight. It’ll be back to the drawing board for Marcelo Bielsa as his Leeds side have now only won once in their last six league games.
