Following a sensational 5-0 win away at Shakhtar Donetsk in the reverse fixture, Real Madrid sought a similarly emphatic scoreline against the Ukrainian outfit at the Santiago Bernabéu. After a frantic start from ‘Los Blancos’, Alan Patrick came within inches of upsetting the odds and giving the visitors the lead against the run of play, when his effort rattled off the post.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, securing their 1,000th European Cup goal following a calamity of errors from the ‘Hirnyky’ defence. A lapse in concentration allowed Vinicius Júnior to steal possession and square to Karim Benzema, who tapped home the opener. Despite the hosts coming close to a second, Shakhtar got an equaliser just before the break. A flighted ball saw a marvellously chested pass from Patrick, slammed home by Fernando, giving Thibaut Courtois no chance as the sides went in level at the break.
Roberto De Zerbi’s men were good value for their point heading into the second half as they looked to repeat their 2020 heroics when they secured a 3-2 win against ‘Los Blancos’. However, Madrid fired home again through the link up of Vinicius and Benzema when an intricate move formed the opportunity for the Frenchman to slot home his second of the evening and secure all three points for ‘Los Blancos’.
The victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side sees them extend their impressive record of six victories in nine home meetings with Ukrainian sides. As for Shakhtar, despite the result, they leave Madrid with their heads held high after an impressive display against the 13-time champions.
