Former Super Eagles striker Anthony Nwakaeme wins the Turkish Süper Lig with Trabzonspor after 38 years of attempting.

The Highland Boys last won the league in the 1983-84 season, finishing ahead of top giants Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray to clinch their seventh Turkish Süper Lig. The search for a new league continues after then, and they triumph finally after 38 years of attempting.

 

Trabzonspor won the title with 77 points above close rival Fernabahce, who are on 68 points. The league was decided after Trabzonspor played a 2-2 draw with Antalyaspor at the Medical Park Stadyumu, Trabzon. Implying that they won the league with 13 points clear with three games to spare.

Anthony Nwakaeme was an unused substitution following their 2-2 draw against Antalyaspor, the Nigerian-born striker has made 25 appearances for the champions this season and has netted 11 times and made 10 assists, only Umet Bozok of Kasimpasa has made more goals contribution than the Nigerian.  Another compatriot in the top scorer’s chat is Kayode Olarewaju who has 6 goals and 1 assist.

 

With three games to end the season, Fenerbahçe, Konyaspor, and Basaksehir will continue to fight for a Champions League spot while Altay, Rizaspor, Goztepe, and Yeni Malatyaspor all battle for the relegation zone.
