The former Barcelona coach Valverde has been appointed as the new head coach for the Athletic club. The Spaniard is a former legend of the club where he played most of his football career for six years. Ernesto, 58, had coached the Athletic club for four years before joining Barcelona in 2017.
The two times La Liga winner was sacked in 2020 and was appointed by the Athletic club this summer.
The Athletic club during his unveiling said:
Valverde is embarking upon a third spell in charge of the Lions. During his previous stints in the San Mamés dugout, Athletic qualified for Europe five times in six seasons, one of those occasions being Champions League qualification. Valverde also broke the Club’s 31-year title drought when he led the side to a 5-1 aggregate win over FC Barcelona in the 2015 Spanish Super Cup.
Furthermore, Ernesto has 140 victories to his name as Athletic manager, and in 2015/16 the Lions were runners-up in the Copa and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Ernesto Valverde’s statement during his conference briefing:
“It’s always an honour to coach Athletic,” said Valverde, whose contract is set to run until June 30, 2023.
“This club means a lot to me. And I know what it means not just to Bilbao, but to a lot of other places around the world too.
“I decided to return because I believe this is a challenge which is exciting and demanding enough to make it worth a go.”
Valverde will oversee his first training session at Lezama next week and said he would be looking to build a side “fans could be proud of”.
He said: “The main objective is that the fans feel proud and can identify with the team. We’ve got a good team to work with and that’s what we’re going to set about doing.
“Now there’s a long way to go until the start of the season and make sure everything is up to scratch.”
