AS Monaco today confirmed the arrival of Malang Sarr on a one-year loan term from Chelsea. Sarr arrived as Monaco’s fourth signing this season after Takumi Minamino, Breel Embolo and Thomas Dillon.  The 23-year-old central defender under contract with Chelsea FC has joined the Principality on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

The French defender returned to his homeland for the coming campaign, where he began his career just a little further along the coast with Nice, becoming a first-team regular at the age of 17 before joining Chelsea in 2020 and signing a five-year contract with the club.

Monaco finished in third place in Ligue 1 last season while reaching the knockout stages of the Europa League, a competition they are competing in again, having last night lost to PSV Eindhoven 4-3 on aggregate in a Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Sarr made his senior Chelsea debut in last season’s Carabao Cup victory over Aston Villa, before his first Premier League appearance in a 1-0 win at Brentford. The 23-year-old played 21 times in total during 2021/22, including coming off the bench in both matches in Abu Dhabi as we triumphed at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Paul Mitchell, AS Monaco’s sporting director, said:

“It is a great joy for us to welcome Malang to the Club. His technical profile and versatility will bring new solutions to our defensive unit. At 23 years of age, Malang knows the demands of the top level, as evidenced by his stints with major European clubs such as Chelsea FC and FC Porto. In our desire to give our squad more experience in the biggest games, he has the profile we were looking for, and he will be a great help to us to face the demanding schedule that we have. We welcome him!

Malang Sarr said:

“I am pleased to join AS Monaco and to be back in Ligue 1 UberEats, a league in which I started and which I know well. I would like to thank the Club for its confidence. I am now looking forward to blending in with my new surroundings and getting to know my new teammates, with the desire to achieve a lot together.”
