An incident in Southampton’s box a few minutes later prompted VAR to award ‘Wolves’ with a penalty that was slotted in coolly by Raúl Jiménez to go one-up. The visitors had two great opportunities to equalise before HT but Mohammed Salisu and Nathan Tella spurned close-quarter chances and allowed the hosts to hold onto their lead.
Southampton came out in the second half with the same spirit that they began the match with, but a quickfire reaction from Conor Coady allowed him to score from a close-range header, and register his first ever league goal at Molineux. ‘Saints’ continued to press forward, despite being two-goals down, and were inspired by James Ward-Prowse and substitute forward Che Adams as the match progressed. And it was the captain Ward-Prowse who hit a trademark stunning freekick to get his side back into the game with 6 minutes left to play. However, as the visitors pushed forward for the equaliser late on, they were hit on the break and Adama Traoré utilised his lightning pace to add a third Wolves goal and seal the victory.
The defeat sees Southampton fail to enter the top half of the table, despite their spirited attempt to oust ‘Wolves’. The hosts on the other hand, extend their impressive unbeaten streak to five matches across all competitions.
